Wisconsin youth ask state supreme court to take up constitutional climate case
Fifteen youth plaintiffs represented by MEA and Our Children’s Trust filed a petition asking the Wisconsin Supreme Court to take up Dunn v. Wisconsin Public Service Commission directly, bypassing the Court of Appeals. Their case raises urgent questions of state constitutional law that are too important to wait years for resolution in the lower courts, all while the state continues to approve new fossil fuel infrastructure that exacerbates climate change and harms their health.
Legal settlement protects wild rice on the Menominee Reservation
With legal representation from MEA, the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin reached a settlement in a lawsuit against the Department of Natural Resources over the use of an herbicide that threatened wild rice beds within the Menominee Reservation. The settlement provides new protections for wild rice while giving the Tribe a greater voice in decisions affecting a resource that is central to Menominee culture, history and self-determination.
MEA clients in Pierce County vow to defend clean water victory after Ridge Breeze Dairy appeals ruling
Pierce County residents took legal action over a permit that failed to protect local groundwater. An administrative law judge sided with them, finding the permit gave the DNR no meaningful way to determine whether the dairy was complying with state groundwater quality standards. The farm has asked a circuit court to overturn the decision, but our clients are determined to defend their hard-fought victory.
Sept 30 Webinar: Making the case for environmental review of Wisconsin data centers
In July, MEA filed a lawsuit on behalf of the Sierra Club over the DNR’s decision to issue permits for a massive data center in Port Washington without fully evaluating the project’s environmental consequences. In this upcoming webinar, we’ll take a closer look at the lawsuit, and we’ll explore how environmental review is supposed to work, why existing processes fail to capture the full impacts of hyperscale data centers, and how legal action and public participation can strengthen environmental oversight.
Action Alert: Tell the Natural Resources Board to revoke Enbridge’s Line 5 reroute permit
The Wisconsin Natural Resources Board will meet on September 23 in Sturgeon Bay. We’re asking you to attend — in person or via Zoom — and urge the Board to take action to revoke Enbridge’s reroute construction permit. If you aren’t able to attend the meeting, you can submit a written comment.
