The Great Lakes, containing almost 20% of the world’s fresh surface water, are valuable and vulnerable. Decisions we make today about how to jointly manage the Great Lakes will impact the economic and environmental vitality of the region. After years of effort, on May 14th, Wisconsin passed the historic Great Lakes Compact, a law that provides the framework for conservation and protection of the Great Lakes. Midwest Environmental Advocates has long been at the forefront of this important policy issue, working closely with legislative sponsors and stakeholders to ensure that the legislation reflect the key policy concerns of the environmental and conservation community. NEW AT MEA |
| NEWS! A report issued June 24th by the US DOJ’s Office of the Inspector General indicates that 2002 and 2006 candidates for the DOJ’s Honors Program and Summer Law Intern Program were “deselected” from consideration based on their political affiliations, organizational memberships, or ideologies. Midwest Environmental Advocates is specifically listed as a “liberal” organization “blacklisted” in the 2002 selection process. Read the report here and MEA’s response to the report here. |

| News on Global Warming: On June 26th, The Governor’s Global Warming Task Force sent policy recommendations to Wisconsin’s Governor Doyle that call for the state to reduce global warming emissions 22% by 2022. MEA and other groups had submitted comments to the task force asking that the policy set stronger limits, faster. Read the comments here. |

Success! On May 1, 2008, MEA, on behalf of Wisconsin Environmental Law Advocates, reached a settlement agreement with Protient, Inc, a Wisconsin whey producer that had been fowling a Wisconsin stream.
