Melissa Scanlan

Ms. Scanlan founded Midwest Environmental Advocates in 1999 after graduating with a law degree and M.S. in Environmental Science, Policy & Management from University of California- Berkeley.  She served as the Executive Director of Midwest Environmental Advocates from 1999 – 2007, when she moved to Milwaukee to open the organization's Milwaukee Office and serve as Senior Counsel from 2007-2010.    Ms. Scanlan is the author of law review articles primarily focused on water law and policy dilemmas, and is often a public speaker and teacher on environmental justice issues, water rights, and more. 

In 2013 Scanlan accepted a position as the Associate Dean of the Vermont Law School and will be using her expertise as the Director of the school’s Environmental Law Center and as the Director of the New Economy Law Center. She was most recently the Water Law and Policy Scholar at University of Wisconsin Law School and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's School of Freshwater Sciences.
